What does the day look like?
The workweek runs 37.5 to 40 hours under standard office or hybrid desk conditions, with no shift work, night shifts, or on-call schedules. Only about 20% of the working time is spent on interpreting climate futures, running models, and informing high-level policy. The remaining 80% consists of routine data cleaning, debugging scripts, formatting multi-gigabyte netCDF arrays, reconciling spatial datasets, and writing technical reports or grant briefs.
Daily technical tools include Python (xarray, netCDF4, pandas, geopandas, scipy), R (raster, sf), CDO, NCO, GIS suites like QGIS and ArcGIS Pro, MATLAB, and modeling systems such as WRF and CESM.
