What does the day look like?
Work follows a standard 40-hour business week from 09:00 to 18:00 with no night shifts or on-call duties. High cyclical crunch periods occur between January and April, driven by annual corporate sustainability and CSRD reporting deadlines.
Only 10% of the day covers the climate policy and decarbonisation advisory that beginners picture. The core 60% is unglamorous data hygiene: tracking utility bills, cleaning messy supplier invoices, and reconciling electricity in kWh, fuel in litres, and freight in tkm across Microsoft Excel formulas and power pivots. Another 20% goes to recalculating emissions across DEFRA/DESNZ, EPA, or ecoinvent emission factor databases across Scope 1, Scope 2, and the 15 Scope 3 categories. The final 10% involves answering third-party auditor queries and preparing evidence binders under ISO 14064-3.
