What does the day look like?
The daily reality is far from riding horses through untouched wilderness. Most of the shift consists of manual labour, facility maintenance, and crowd control. Tasks include clearing trail obstructions with Stihl chainsaws, repairing footbridges, collecting rubbish from animal-proof bins, and cleaning public toilets. Rangers also manage overcrowded car parks, issue campfire permits, and record spatial data using Garmin inReach devices, Esri ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, and the SMART database.
Schedules revolve heavily around weekend and holiday shifts. Backcountry rangers frequently work rotating schedules, such as 8 days on patrol followed by 6 days off, living in remote off-grid cabins without cellular coverage. Protection staff face on-call duties for night search and rescue, wildland fires, and armed anti-poaching operations.
