What does the day look like?
Between 30% and 50% of your time is spent in the field: taking water and soil samples, conducting habitat surveys, GPS ground-truthing, and collecting water-quality or eDNA samples. Driving to field sites is common, so a valid driving licence is often required.
The remaining 50% to 70% of the day takes place at an office desk. You input data into Excel, build map layers using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or QGIS, analyze satellite data in Google Earth Engine or Collect Earth Online, run basic statistics in R or Python, and draft technical reports for stakeholders. Workweeks run 32 to 40 hours, or 37.5 hours in international posts. Night shifts and on-call work are untypical for interns, though summer field seasons involve long outdoor days.
