What does the day look like?
Between 80% and 85% of your time is spent at a desk rather than outdoors. Writing technical reports accounts for 55% to 60% of the job, including Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA, ESIA), Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMP), and discharge permits. Professionals map project footprints using ArcGIS Pro and QGIS, model air dispersion with AERMOD and CALPUFF, calculate noise propagation via SoundPLAN and CadnaA, and simulate groundwater flow using MODFLOW.
Outdoor ecological surveys represent only 15% to 20% of the role. Site visits involve walking active construction corridors, chemical plants, or landfills in high-visibility gear and steel-toe boots to collect soil samples, screen volatile organics with Photoionization Detectors (PID), test water with YSI or Hanna Instruments sondes, and monitor dust using TSI DustTrak. Standard working hours are 37.5 to 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. However, baseline noise or stack emission runs can require 5:00 AM starts, and nocturnal wildlife monitoring or 24-hour concrete pours bring occasional night shifts.
