What does the day look like?
Full-time contracts require 37.5 hours per week in the UK NHS, 38 hours in Australia, and 40 hours in the United States and Germany. Standard shifts run from 08:00 or 08:30 to 16:30 or 17:00, Monday to Friday. Acute hospital settings require rostered weekend shifts roughly 1 in 4 or 1 in 6 weekends, while night shifts account for 0% of the schedule. Teenagers often imagine that 85% of the work involves playing games or doing arts and crafts with children. In clinical reality, 35% to 45% of the day is spent with complex adult, geriatric, and stroke patients coping with physical incontinence, cognitive decline, and acute discharge pressures, while 55% to 65% is consumed by paperwork, multidisciplinary coordination, and equipment logistics.
During the 35% to 45% of direct clinical contact, you retrain daily living activities like dressing, washing, and meal preparation, measure grip strength using Jamar hydraulic hand dynamometers, and practice transfers with Oxford hoists or Sara Stedy standing aids. Another 30% to 40% of the day is spent logging clinical notes and discharge reports into Electronic Health Record software such as Epic Systems, Cerner Millennium, or SystmOne. The remaining 20% to 25% goes to multidisciplinary team handovers, family conferences, and home visits to measure door frames and bathroom layouts for adaptations.
