What does the day look like?
You work 37.5 hours per week on a standard contract, scheduled as 7.5 hours per day from Monday through Friday (08:30 to 16:30 or 09:00 to 17:00). In acute hospital trusts, 7-day service rotas require working 1 weekend every 4 to 6 weeks, offset by rest days during the week. Night shifts and overnight on-call duties are generally not required. The role is split into 50% to 60% clinical practice and 40% to 50% operational management. Direct patient rehabilitation coaching occupies only 25% of working hours. The rest is divided: 30% goes to complex discharge administration, legal clinical documentation, and equipment ordering; 35% to supervising 6 to 8 staff, managing rotas, and meetings; and 10% to statutory clinical audits and IT compliance.
Clinically, you manage unstable caseloads (such as severe stroke or trauma), run assessments like FIM/FAM, AMPS, COPM, MoCA, and Barthel Index, prescribe dynamic seating, and join daily MDT ward rounds. Operationally, you lead 2 to 3 Band 6 Senior OTs, 2 to 3 Band 5 OTs, and 1 to 2 assistants, conducting monthly 1-to-1 supervision and managing equipment budgets. You use Electronic Patient Record systems including Epic, Cerner Millennium, SystmOne, EMIS Web, and RiO, report incidents on Datix or LFPSE, schedule shifts via Allocate HealthRoster and ESR, and order community equipment through ELMS and ICES.
