What does the day look like?
Your working week is 37.5 hours under standard NHS contracts, or 40 hours in the United States and Australia, operating Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00. Routine night work is 0%, though senior leads in acute hospital trusts participate in an on-call manager rota covering 1 weekend every 6 to 8 weeks.
Between 70% and 80% of your day is administrative management: meetings, reviewing departmental budgets from GBP 1,000,000 to GBP 5,000,000 on Oracle Financials, approving shift rotas on Allocate HealthRoster, appraising staff on Electronic Staff Record, and recruiting Band 6 and Band 7 clinicians. The remaining 20% to 30% is clinical oversight: investigating incidents in Datix or Ulysses, managing complaints, supervising team leads, and maintaining standards for inspections under the Care Quality Commission or The Joint Commission. At Band 8b and Band 8c levels, routine direct patient treatments are 0%, intervening only during clinical crises.
