What does the day look like?
Your working day is split into 40% to 50% direct child intervention and 50% to 60% clinical documentation and multidisciplinary coordination. In 30 to 45-minute sessions, you guide fine motor activities, including tripod pencil grasp retraining, scissor mechanics, and manipulation of Theraputty or pegboards. You administer sensory integration therapy using suspended equipment such as platform swings, lycra hammocks, sensory brushes, and weighted blankets. You also train activities of daily living, including shoe-tying, buttoning, and using cutlery, alongside fitting adaptive seating aids. The role involves physical demands such as frequent kneeling on therapy floor mats, transferring children, and lifting heavy suspended equipment.
The remaining hours are spent administering standardized assessments like BOT-2, PDMS-3, and Sensory Profile 2, as well as drafting legally binding reports such as an EHCP in the UK or an IEP in the US. You log encounters into electronic health records like SystmOne, Rio, or IEP Direct, and participate in Team Around the Child (TAC) meetings with paediatricians and educational psychologists. Work runs Monday through Friday, 08:30 to 16:30 or 09:00 to 17:00 (37.5 hours per week in the UK NHS, 38 hours in Australia, and 40 hours in the US). Paediatric school and outpatient roles carry 0% night shifts and 0% weekend on-call duties.
