What does the day look like?
Your working week is 37.5 hours in the UK NHS, 38 hours in Australia, and 40 hours in the United States. The schedule runs Monday through Friday, 08:30 to 16:30 or 09:00 to 17:00. Shift work is almost non-existent in community pediatrics, with 0% night shifts and 0% on-call duties in outpatient, clinic, and school settings.
Direct clinical work with children accounts for 40% to 50% of your day. Each session lasts 45 minutes, followed by 15 minutes for equipment sanitization and notes. During this time, you administer Ayres Sensory Integration (ASI) therapy on suspended swings, climbing walls, and crash mats, or retrain fine motor skills like pencil grasping, scissor cutting, and daily living skills like buttoning and shoe tying. The remaining 30% to 40% of the day is consumed by documentation and drafting statutory legal reports (such as EHCP in the UK or IEP in the US) inside clinical software like SystmOne, EMIS Web, or Epic Systems. Another 10% to 20% is spent traveling between schools, attending team meetings, and consulting with parents and teachers.
