What does the day look like?
Between 80% and 85% of your working hours consist of heavy physical labour and direct hygiene: lifting adult clients, sponge-bathing, showering, changing incontinence pads, cleaning urine and faeces, and repositioning bed-bound individuals every 2 hours to prevent Stage 1 and Stage 2 pressure ulcers. You operate mechanical patient hoists such as Arjo, Invacare, and Sara Stedy standing aids, slide sheets, and transfer belts. You prompt medications from sealed dosette boxes or Webster packs, track blood pressure and pulse, carry out passive range-of-motion exercises, and log bowel movements via the Bristol Stool Scale into electronic care software like Pass, Birdie, CareMaster, AlayaCare, or Danrec. Social companionship, conversation, and garden walks make up only 15% to 20% of the day.
Full-time schedules run 37.5 to 40 hours per week. Residential care facilities operate a 3-shift rotation: early morning (06:00 to 14:30), late evening (14:00 to 22:00), and night shift (21:45 to 07:15). Domiciliary carers visit 4 to 8 client homes daily on split shifts (07:00 to 11:30 and 16:00 to 20:30). Live-in roles require 24-hour on-call residence in the client's home, alternating 1 to 2 weeks on-duty with 1 to 2 weeks off-duty.
