What does the day look like?
As an occupational therapy placement student, you work 37.5 hours per week in the UK NHS, 38.0 hours in Australia, or 40.0 hours in the United States. Typical shifts run Monday through Friday, from 08:00 or 08:30 to 16:30 or 17:00. Night shifts and on-call duties are prohibited for students. Weekend work is rare, though occasional day shifts occur in acute hospitals with 7-day services. You work under the continuous direct supervision of a Practice Educator (a Band 6 or Band 7 therapist in the UK).
Only 20% to 25% of your day involves the creative therapeutic activities or motivational work people imagine. Direct physical rehabilitation takes 30% to 35% of the time: assessing daily living activities like washing and dressing, measuring joint range with a goniometer and grip strength with a Jamar dynamometer, and fitting equipment such as raised toilet seats, perching stools, and wheelchairs. Between 35% and 40% of every day is spent writing SOAP progress notes and entering data into electronic systems like SystmOne, EMIS Health, or Epic Systems. The final 10% is dedicated to formal supervision and logging hours toward the 1,000-hour requirement.
