What does the day look like?
Standard full-time schedules run 37.5 hours per week in the UK NHS and 40 hours per week in the US, Canada, and private clinics. Core day shifts span from 08:00 to 16:30 or 08:30 to 17:00. Inpatient neuro-rehabilitation and stroke wards require rotational coverage, including 1 weekend in every 4 weekends. On-call duties do not apply to this role. Night shifts do not exist in outpatient clinics, though specialized residential spinal or brain injury facilities may run 12-hour waking shifts.
Direct hands-on therapy and exercise guidance make up 40% of the working day. During this time, you mobilize and transfer patients using Oxford mechanical hoists, Sara Stedy standing aids, slide sheets, transfer boards, rollators, and parallel bars. You also guide daily living retraining using button hooks, long-handled shoehorns, raised toilet seats, angled cutlery, and Dycem mats, and run exercise drills with Therabands, Theraputty, pedal ergometers, wobble boards, and digital grip dynamometers. The remaining time is routine service: 25% goes to sanitizing equipment with antimicrobial wipes, charging hoist batteries, and prepping therapy areas; 20% is administrative work logging clinical data and schedules into Epic Systems, Cerner / Oracle Health, EMIS Health, or TPP SystmOne; and 15% involves wheeling inpatients between wards, gyms, and radiology departments.
