What does the day look like?
Roughly a third of the day is spent handing medicines to customers and advising on non-prescription products. The rest of the time goes to stocking shelves, unloading deliveries, labelling products, taking calls from clinics and surgeries, running cash registers, and entering medicine data into dispensary and patient-record software. In hospital environments, assistants also deliver medicines to wards and handle medical-gas deliveries.
According to O*NET data, 100% of workers handle telephone conversations every day, 74% stand continually or almost continually, and 98% rate being exact or accurate as extremely important. Typical hours run from 36 to 40 per week. There is no clinical on-call duty, but working on shifts that cover evenings, weekends, and bank holidays is standard.
