What does the day look like?
A foundation trainee pharmacist works 37.5 hours per week under the continuous supervision of a designated tutor across 52 weeks. Daily duties include pulling stock, measuring liquids, assembling blisters, and generating labels using dispensary systems such as EMIS Health (ProScript Connect), Titan PMR, RxWeb, or Positive Solutions (Analyst). In hospital trusts, trainees use Epic Systems, Cerner Millennium, or JAC Medicines Management, join clinical ward rounds, and administer supervised services such as blood pressure checks and intramuscular flu vaccinations, using BNF app, emc, and Stockley Drug Interactions for reference.
The scientific compounding and clinical diagnosing that many imagine occupies only 10% to 15% of the day. In reality, 45% of the time is spent on manual dispensing, counting, and box-unpacking, 25% on administrative record-keeping, controlled drugs audits, and e-portfolio logging, and 20% on supervised patient consultations. Shifts often include rostered Saturdays, but overnight emergency on-call duty is restricted to fully registered pharmacists.
