What does the day look like?
Direct patient interaction takes 15% to 25% of your daily hours. In that time, you explain dosing schedules, advise on adverse effects, demonstrate devices like inhalers and insulin pens, and administer seasonal immunisations. The remaining 75% to 85% of the day is technical and administrative processing. You review prescriptions for incorrect dosages, flag drug-drug interactions, resolve discrepancies with doctors, handle insurance billing, maintain statutory narcotic logs, and supervise pharmacy technicians.
Daily tools include community pharmacy software like EMIS Health, ProScript Connect, and PioneerRx, hospital EHR systems such as Epic Systems (Willow Pharmacy) and Cerner, alongside automated robotic dispensing units like BD Rowa and ScriptPro. Community retail positions require 37.5 to 45 hours per week across shifts, including weekends and late shifts up to 22:00 or 24-hour rotas. Hospital pharmacists work 37.5 to 40 hours weekly, with mandatory rotating weekend cover and emergency night on-call shifts to release urgent antidotes and antibiotics.
