What does the day look like?
A Senior Pharmacist works 37.5 to 40 hours per week, with rotating weekend rosters, on-call hospital rotas, or evening dispensary shifts. Around 35% of the working day is dedicated to direct clinical verification: evaluating complex polypharmacy prescriptions, calculating drug dosages for patients with renal failure or hepatic impairment, therapeutic drug monitoring (such as aminoglycoside and vancomycin trough levels), and checking intravenous compatibility.
About 25% of the day involves regulatory audits, clinical governance, and compliance: inspecting controlled drug registers, auditing antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) compliance, investigating medication incidents using root-cause analysis systems like Datix, and drafting standard operating procedures (SOPs). Another 20% is allocated to supervising and tutoring pre-registration trainee pharmacists and assessing pharmacy technician competencies. The remaining 20% includes attending multidisciplinary ward rounds and meetings, advising medical consultants on drug alternatives during supply shortages, and contributing to formulary committees. Clinical tools include Epic Systems, Cerner Millennium, EMIS Health, BD Pyxis, Omnicell, ROWA robots, and drug reference platforms like the British National Formulary (BNF) and Lexicomp.
