What does the day look like?
The working day involves receiving and validating prescriptions, entering prescription data into pharmacy management systems, and maintaining patient medication profiles. Daily tasks include counting and labelling medicines, prepacking bulk stock, managing the security of controlled drugs, ordering stock, and checking invoices alongside expiry dates. Technicians also operate tills, answer phones, resolve straightforward customer queries, and refer clinical questions directly to the pharmacist. In hospitals, the role extends to preparing sterile products under aseptic procedures in laminar-flow cabinets, sterilising glassware, and delivering medications to wards.
Tools and software include dispensing databases, billing software, Pyxis MedStation, hospital MEDITECH software, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, counting balances, labelling printers, and automated dispensing robots that technicians stock and monitor. Patient-facing interaction covers roughly one-third of the time in community pharmacies, while the remaining time consists of data entry, inventory, queue management, and cleaning. In the United Kingdom, hours typically run 37 to 40 hours per week on rotas covering evenings, weekends, and on-call or night shifts in larger hospitals.
