What does the day look like?
You work at a desk, not on a full-time field crew. The day is 3D geological and domain modelling, statistical analysis, geostatistics, grade estimation, conditional simulation, validating drilling databases, QA/QC of assays, site inspections, due diligence and project reviews, mineral asset valuation, and technical reporting to JORC, NI 43-101, PERC, SAMREC and SME Guide standards. The tools are Leapfrog Geo, Datamine Discover and Supervisor, Seequent Oasis montaj, Micromine Spry and Micromine Origin, Hexagon MinePlan, GEOVIA Surpac, Isatis.neo, Snowden Supervisor, Esri ArcGIS, QGIS, acQuire and Datashed, plus Python, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Project.
At senior level, 70% to 80% of time goes to modelling, writing, checking and meetings, with field time packed into due-diligence site visits of a few days. For O*NET 19-2042.00, 96% use email every day, 73% have face-to-face team discussions every day, 52% work more than 40 hours per week, 59% sit more than 50% of the time, and 44% are outdoors in all weather at least weekly. There is no roster shift pattern. Pressure comes from deal timetables, stock-exchange filing deadlines and arbitration schedules, and night work means travel and report deadlines.
