What does the day look like?
At this level you are not a field geologist. You run geology as an executive. Your day covers exploration strategy and capital allocation across a project portfolio, technical due diligence on mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and farm-ins, governance of mineral resource and ore reserve estimates reported under codes such as JORC, presenting results and guidance to the board, auditors and investors, and hiring, mentoring and performance-managing country and project geology teams.
The occupational profile lists 32 tasks, including planning field studies and drilling programmes, preparing geological maps and reports, analysing data with computer software, and estimating ore deposits from survey results. Named software includes Gemcom Surpac, ESRI ArcGIS software, Geosoft Oasis montaj, MATLAB, EarthWorks Downhole Explorer and Microsoft Project. The field and modelling work takes a small share of a VP week. Most of the week is portfolio review, budget decisions, reporting and meetings. The role is headquarters based with frequent travel to project sites and investor centres. There is no night shift, but on-call availability applies around safety incidents, drilling results releases and market announcements. In survey data 52% report working more than 40 hours a week and 96% use email every day.
