What does the day look like?
Most of the working day is spent in an office or hybrid setup converting drilling data into mathematical 3D block models. About 25% of the day goes to data validation and QA/QC, auditing drillhole coordinates and assay certificates in database systems like maxgeo (DataShed) or acQuire GIM Suite. Another 30% is dedicated to 3D geological modelling and wireframing in Seequent Leapfrog Geo, Datamine Studio RM, Maptek Vulcan, or Micromine, while 25% involves statistical compositing, variography, and running interpolation algorithms like Ordinary Kriging using Isatis.neo or Supervisor.
Drafting technical chapters and classifying mineral blocks under JORC or NI 43-101 reporting codes takes 15% of the schedule. Only 5% of the time involves visiting mine sites, reviewing core logging consistency, and inspecting open pits or underground workings. Corporate offices follow a standard 40-hour week from Monday to Friday. Remote mine sites operate on Fly-In Fly-Out rosters such as 8 days on / 6 days off or 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off, with 10 to 12 hours per shift. Night shifts and on-call duties are rare.
