What does the day look like?
You write, refactor, and debug native or cross-platform code for smartphones, tablets, and wearables using Kotlin, Swift, Dart (Flutter), or TypeScript/JavaScript (React Native). Core tasks include integrating RESTful and GraphQL APIs, managing local data caching (Room, CoreData, SQLite, Realm), handling asynchronous state, and fixing layout breaks across differing screen aspect ratios. Daily work relies on tools such as Android Studio, Xcode, Visual Studio Code, Git, GitHub, GitLab, Postman, Charles Proxy, Firebase Crashlytics, and Sentry.
While beginners often expect to spend their days building sleek interfaces and animations from scratch, that makes up only about 30 percent of the job. The remaining 70 percent is routine engineering: 25 percent is spent debugging device-specific bugs and memory leaks, 20 percent on adapting to OS lifecycle changes and permissions, 15 percent on API contract negotiation and offline data synchronization, and 10 percent on store compliance via Apple App Store Connect, Google Play Console, and Fastlane. Schedules follow a standard 40-hour workweek without regular night shifts, though on-call duty or overtime occurs during major releases, store deadline submissions, or production outages.
Will AI replace this job?
ILO 2025 exposure index: 0.53, on a 0-to-1 scale. This figure applies to ISCO-08 2512 Software Developers, the group used for Mobile Application Developers; the dossier also links the job to ISCO-08 2514 Applications Programmers. The important point is that this is task exposure, not a forecast that the whole job disappears. ILO assigns the score entirely to augmentation rather than outright automation: generative AI is treated mainly as an efficiency multiplier.
The exposed part of the day is the routine, syntax-bound work: generating boilerplate code, writing unit tests, turning RESTful API contracts into JSON serialization models, producing standard UI layout components, and drafting preliminary documentation. The less exposed or unexposed part is the harder engineering work: tracing asynchronous race conditions and memory leaks across Android and iOS hardware, negotiating breaking backend data contracts, diagnosing edge-case crashes through Sentry or Firebase Crashlytics, resolving OS background execution and permission limits, and handling App Store legal compliance, review rejections, and privacy manifests. OECD 2023 places software engineering occupations in the lowest risk category for job destruction, with an automation risk score of approximately 0.09. WEF 2025 ranks software and applications developers among roles with net positive worldwide employment growth through 2030.
What do you need to start?
Mobile application development is legally unregulated, meaning no government licence or statutory registration is required to practice. Private companies and startups can legally hire self-taught developers and bootcamp graduates based on their portfolios.
However, enterprise employers such as banks and telecom corporations typically expect a Bachelor's degree (Level 6 EQF/NQF) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Information Technology. Furthermore, international skilled worker visas (such as the German EU Blue Card, US H-1B, or South Korean E-7) generally require an accredited university degree in a relevant field. In Germany, updated rules allow candidates with at least three years of documented IT experience within the past seven years to substitute for a degree if salary thresholds are met. Vendor credentials like the Google Associate Android Developer or Meta React Native Specialization validate skills but do not substitute for academic degrees in visa applications.
Where do you study, and for how long?
In Uzbekistan, several universities offer software engineering degrees. Inha University in Tashkent (IUT) offers a 4-year English-medium BSc in Computer Science and Software Engineering (SOCIE) at an annual tuition of UZS 40,400,000 (2024/2025). Tashkent University of Information Technologies (TUIT) teaches a 4-year Software Engineering (BSc) in Uzbek and Russian with a base contract of approximately UZS 11,000,000 per academic year. Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) provides a 3 to 4-year English-taught BSc (Hons) in Business Information Systems / Applied IT for UZS 33,000,000 annually. Amity University Tashkent runs a 4-year B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering at UZS 30,000,000 per academic year.
Viable international destinations include the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany, which offers a 3-year German-taught Bachelor of Science in Informatics costing EUR 2,000 to EUR 3,000 per semester for non-EU students plus an EUR 85 semester fee. In Poland, Warsaw University of Technology teaches an English-medium 4-year B.Sc. in Computer Science at EUR 4,500 per academic year. South Korea's Inha University offers a 4-year BSc in Computer Science and Engineering with tuition of KRW 4,500,000 per semester (approximately USD 6,800 annually). In the United States, San Jose State University (SJSU) provides a 4-year BS in Software Engineering with non-resident tuition of approximately USD 18,500 per year. In Malaysia, Asia Pacific University (APU) offers a 3-year English-taught BSc in IT specializing in Mobile Technology for roughly USD 8,500 annually.
Foreign degree recognition in Uzbekistan is processed via my.gov.uz for a fee of 2 BHM (UZS 750,000, with 1 BHM at UZS 375,000), with automatic evaluation for top-1,000 universities. Recognizing an Uzbek degree abroad costs EUR 208 in Germany through ZAB, GBP 49.50 in the UK through UK ENIC, and USD 170 to USD 240 in the US through NACES-member agencies like WES.
Where can you actually work?
Mobile development is in high demand in Uzbekistan across fintech and neobanks (Payme, Click, Uzum Bank, Anorbank, TBC Bank Uzbekistan), e-commerce and superapps (Uzum Market, Express24, Yandex Go Uzbekistan), and telecommunications (Ucell, Beeline Uzbekistan, Playmobile). Domestic monthly earnings range from USD 300 to USD 600 (UZS 3,800,000 to UZS 7,600,000) for juniors, USD 1,000 to USD 2,000 (UZS 12,700,000 to UZS 25,400,000) for mid-level developers, and USD 2,500 to USD 3,500 for senior engineers. Self-employed developers exporting services pay 0% personal income tax and an annual social tax of 1 BHM (UZS 375,000), while IT Park resident employees pay a 7.5% income tax rate compared to the standard 12%.
Remote work is fully viable, with hundreds of Uzbek engineers contracting directly for companies in the UAE, the US, and Europe. For relocation, Germany (where the 2025 IT shortage EU Blue Card threshold is EUR 43,759.80 gross annually, compared to standard EUR 48,300) and Poland (junior monthly earnings of PLN 6,000 to PLN 9,000 gross) represent accessible pathways. In the United States (median wage USD 135,980, entry-level USD 77,020) and the United Kingdom (median wage GBP 49,400, visa minimum GBP 38,700), moving requires navigating strict work visa sponsorship and salary thresholds.
Where are the jobs posted?
Inside Uzbekistan, local openings are published on HeadHunter Uzbekistan (hh.uz), the official IT Park portal it-market.uz, and the @UstozShogird Telegram channel. These listings from domestic banks, fintech firms, and IT Park residents can be applied to directly from within the country.
For international remote contracts, developers use Upwork (freelance and contract-to-hire), Toptal (vetted senior network), Wellfound (startup recruitment), and RemoteOK (worldwide remote roles). Job boards within target destinations include StepStone (stepstone.de) and Arbeitsagentur Jobbörse (arbeitsagentur.de/jobsuche) in Germany, Just Join IT (justjoin.it) and No Fluff Jobs (nofluffjobs.com) in Poland, Reed.co.uk and CWJobs (cwjobs.co.uk) in the UK, and LinkedIn Jobs alongside Indeed in the US. Applying through these destination-specific boards typically requires either existing local work authorization or an employer willing to sponsor a work visa.
How much English, honestly?
University entry requirements depend on the study destination. Warsaw University of Technology accepts IELTS Academic 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 72, SJSU in the US requires IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80, and APU Malaysia requires IELTS 5.0 to 6.0. In South Korea, Inha University requires IELTS 5.5 to 6.0 (or TOEFL iBT 71) for English tracks and TOPIK level 3 or 4 for Korean-taught tracks. In Germany, TUM's German-taught programs require TestDaF (minimum 4 in all sections) or DSH-2, while English-taught components require IELTS Academic 6.5 (minimum 6.0 per band) or TOEFL iBT 88.
On the job, working proficiency in English (CEFR B2 to C1) is essential regardless of location, including in Uzbekistan. Mobile SDK documentation, Apple Human Interface Guidelines, Android Developer docs, GitHub pull requests, and technical troubleshooting on Stack Overflow exist almost entirely in English. While local development studios may speak Uzbek or Russian internally, working for domestic enterprise clients abroad requires fluency in the local language (such as German, French, Korean TOPIK 4, or Japanese JLPT N2) for sprint meetings and requirement discussions.
