What does the day look like?
Most of the working day revolves around systematic testing and technical documentation. Between 40% and 50% of your time is spent drafting test cases, writing detailed bug reports with reproduction steps in Atlassian Jira, Linear, or Bugzilla, and maintaining test suites in TestRail, Zephyr, Xray, or Qase. Another 20% to 30% involves active exploratory and regression testing across web, mobile (iOS/Android), and desktop applications, inspecting API traffic via Postman, Swagger UI, Charles Proxy, or Fiddler, and checking database records with basic SQL queries in DBeaver or pgAdmin.
The remaining 20% to 30% goes to team communication and Agile ceremonies, including daily standups, sprint planning, and clarifying edge cases with developers and product managers. Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 37.5 to 40 hours per week. Evening or weekend work is rare at junior levels, occurring mainly during pre-launch release verification windows.
Will AI replace this job?
ILO/NASK 2025 exposure index: 0.55, Gradient 3 for ISCO-08 2519 Software and applications developers and analysts not elsewhere classified; 0.53, Gradient 3 for ISCO-08 3514 Web technicians / Information and communications technology operations technicians. This index measures task exposure to AI assistance and restructuring, not whether the whole job disappears. ILO describes Gradient 3 as augmentation, where most roles are transformed rather than eliminated.
For your working day, the exposed part is the documentation and repeatable testing side: drafting boilerplate test cases and test suites from written requirements, writing standard bug reproduction steps, generating boundary value data, and running scripted regression passes. The low-exposure part is exploratory and ad-hoc testing that needs non-linear judgement, checking subjective user experience and edge-case behaviour across devices, aligning with the team during sprint planning and backlog refinement, and negotiating defect severity with product managers and developers. OECD 2023 puts this occupational group in a less than 20% band on the probability of full automation scale. WEF 2025 says employers expect positive net job creation for software quality assurance and testing, with a net balance of +18% over 2025–2030.
What do you need to start?
Software QA testing is not a legally regulated profession, meaning no license or statutory degree is required by law to work locally or freelance. Employers look for practical aptitude in finding defects, clear bug reproduction steps, and verifiable testing artifacts. However, securing international work-visa sponsorship, such as an EU Blue Card, UK Skilled Worker Visa, or US H-1B, strictly requires a recognised Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, or an allied STEM field.
The globally recognised entry-level industry credential is the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL), administered by boards such as AT*SQA (exam fee USD 229) or GASQ/iSQI (EUR 180 to EUR 250 plus VAT). Major IT outsourcing firms like EPAM, Exadel, and Cognizant treat this certificate as formal validation of testing methodology when filtering junior applicants.
Where do you study, and for how long?
No major university offers a standalone undergraduate degree titled "BSc QA Testing". Students enter the field through general Computer Science or Software Engineering degrees. In Uzbekistan, Inha University in Tashkent (IUT) teaches a 4-year English-taught Bachelor in Computer and Software Engineering with an annual domestic tuition of UZS 40,400,000 (2025–2026). Tashkent University of Information Technologies (TUIT) offers a 4-year Software Engineering degree in Uzbek/Russian for UZS 7,400,000 to UZS 9,000,000 per year. Amity University Tashkent offers a 4-year English-medium B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering at approximately USD 3,400 / UZS 42,000,000 annually. Vocational short courses lasting 3 to 6 months covering Manual QA, Postman, SQL, and Jira are run by IT Park Uzbekistan resident centres.
Abroad, leading tech hubs offer foundational undergraduate degrees. In Poland, Warsaw University of Technology offers an English-taught B.Sc. in Computer Science lasting 3.5 to 4 years for EUR 4,500 per academic year. In Germany, Technical University of Munich (TUM) offers a 3-year German-taught B.Sc. in Informatics costing EUR 4,000 per semester (EUR 8,000 per year) for non-EU students. In Ireland, Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) provides a 4-year English-taught B.Sc. (Hons) in Computing / Software Development for EUR 14,500 per year. In the UK, University of Hertfordshire offers a 3-year B.Sc. (Hons) Computer Science for GBP 16,000 per year.
Foreign diploma recognition is required for international employment. Germany uses the ZAB and anabin database (fee EUR 200 for a Statement of Comparability), the UK processes credentials via UK ENIC (Ecctis, fee GBP 49.50 to GBP 210), and the US uses NACES evaluation services such as WES (fee USD 170 to USD 235).
Where can you actually work?
The role is well-established within Uzbekistan. Major employers in Tashkent include delivery centres such as EPAM Systems, Exadel, and iTransition, local fintech platforms like Payme, Click, and Uzum Bank, and telecoms like Ucell and Beeline. In Tashkent, Junior Manual QA salaries range from UZS 4,000,000 to UZS 8,000,000 net per month, while Middle QA Engineers earn UZS 10,000,000 to UZS 20,000,000 net per month.
Direct remote hiring from Western employers for candidates with zero experience is extremely competitive. Foreign companies hiring remotely in Central Asia typically require 1 to 2 years of commercial experience, strong Postman/API skills, and B2 spoken English, hiring via entities like EPAM Anywhere. For relocation, tech hubs like Poland and Germany represent viable markets with degree sponsorship, whereas moving directly to the US or Switzerland on an entry-level manual QA work visa is virtually closed. Uzbekistan has no government bilateral labour quotas for software testing.
Where are the jobs posted?
Applicants working from Uzbekistan can access crowd-testing and freelance platforms that do not require local residency, including uTest (Applause), Testlio, and Upwork for initial project experience. Remote corporate contracts across Central Asia are listed on EPAM Anywhere, while domestic roles in Tashkent are posted on HeadHunter Uzbekistan (hh.uz).
Job boards in destination countries generally require local work authorisation before applying. Primary platforms include Just Join IT, No Fluff Jobs, and Pracuj.pl in Poland; StepStone Germany and Arbeitsagentur Jobbörse in Germany; and Reed and CWJobs in the UK. Globally, tech listings are found on LinkedIn Jobs and Wellfound / AngelList.
How much English, honestly?
University entry requirements vary by country and medium of instruction. English-taught degrees in Poland, the UK, and Ireland require IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 (or TOEFL iBT 75–87, PTE 58–65). German-taught undergraduate programmes at institutions like TUM do not take IELTS, requiring TestDaF level 4 across all sections or DSH-2, while South Korean tracks require TOPIK Level 3 to 4 (or IELTS 5.5–6.0 for international tracks).
On the job, English is required every single day. Drafting test cases, reproduction steps, and Jira tickets requires technical written English at B1 to B2 level. Crucially, working with international or remote engineering teams requires fluent spoken English at B2 level. Testers must verbally explain complex software edge cases, argue defect severity during sprint meetings, and participate in daily voice standups. Candidates with only written B1 English are routinely rejected in international remote interviews.
