What does the day look like?
Around 40% of your working time is spent researching, testing software features, reading source code, and interviewing software engineers and product managers to understand system behaviors. About 35% is dedicated to drafting, structuring, and formatting clear manuals, architecture diagrams, code samples, and API schemas (OpenAPI / Swagger) using Markdown, AsciiDoc, or DITA/XML. The remaining 25% involves reviewing text, tracking issues in Jira, and submitting pull requests via Git to resolve technical feedback.
Daily tools include authoring and markup environments like Visual Studio Code, Oxygen XML Editor, Sphinx, MkDocs, and Docusaurus, alongside Git, GitHub, GitLab, Postman, Draw.io, Lucidchart, Confluence, Paligo, and MadCap Flare. The job follows a standard 38-to-40-hour weekly office or remote schedule. Shift work, on-call rotations, and night shifts do not exist in this field.
Will AI replace this job?
ILO 2025 exposure index: 0.55, gradient 3. This is for ISCO-08 2641 Authors and related writers on a 0-to-1 scale, placing the group in Exposure Gradient 3 (high exposure). The number measures task-level exposure to generative AI, not net job destruction or headcount elimination. OECD 2023 also places ISCO 2641 in the top quintile of occupations exposed to language model capabilities.
For this job, the exposed part is the 35% of the day spent drafting, structuring, and formatting documentation, working in Markdown, AsciiDoc, or DITA, writing OpenAPI/Swagger descriptions, and producing first drafts of release notes or troubleshooting steps. The less exposed part is the 40% spent interviewing engineers, reproducing edge cases, reading source code, and manually checking API responses in Postman: language models cannot negotiate product specifications with engineers or verify the real system against undocumented behavior. The 25% spent on Jira issues, Git pull requests, and technical reviews is partly exposed: automated linting, style checking, and schema validation can help, but human sign-off and editorial judgement remain mandatory. WEF 2023 classifies these writing-related tasks as mainly augmented by generative AI, with employers expecting task reconfiguration rather than direct role eradication.
What do you need to start?
Legally, no state license, mandatory qualification, or certified registration is required in any major market, as technical writing is an unregulated profession.
In practice, employers typically expect a Bachelor's degree (Level 6) in Technical Communication, Computer Science, Information Technology, English Linguistics, or Journalism. However, for software and API documentation roles, a demonstrable portfolio—such as a GitHub repository, open-source documentation contributions, and sample API guides—frequently substitutes for a formal degree. Professional credentials like the CPTC from the Society for Technical Communication (STC) or the tekom Technical Communicator certificate demonstrate industry competency, but they remain optional.
Where do you study, and for how long?
There is no dedicated undergraduate or postgraduate degree titled Technical Writing or Technical Communication in Uzbekistan. Local practitioners enter the field through related programmes: a 4-year Bachelor in Computer Science or Software Engineering at Tashkent University of Information Technologies (TUIT, annual tuition UZS 8,800,000 to UZS 10,500,000 in 2025/2026), a 4-year Bachelor in English Linguistics at Uzbekistan State World Languages University (USWLU, annual tuition UZS 7,400,000 to UZS 9,200,000), or a 4-year BSc in Business Information Systems at Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT, annual tuition UZS 33,200,000).
Dedicated technical communication degrees are offered in a limited number of destinations abroad. In Ireland, the University of Limerick offers a 1-year MA in Technical Communication & E-Learning taught in English, with non-EU tuition of EUR 18,600 per year (2026/2027 intake). In Germany, Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Karlsruhe - HKA) runs a 3.5-year (7 semesters) B.Sc. in Kommunikation und Medienmanagement taught in German; non-EU tuition is EUR 1,500 per semester (EUR 3,000 per year) plus an administrative fee of EUR 195 per semester. In the United States, Mercer University offers a 4-year B.S. in Technical Communication taught in English at USD 41,360 per academic year. In the United Kingdom, Sheffield Hallam University offers a 1-year MA in Technical Communication taught in English with international tuition of GBP 17,200 per year. Most European and Asian countries (such as Italy, Poland, Japan, South Korea, and Türkiye) do not run standalone undergraduate degrees in technical writing.
Degree evaluation requires an official comparability assessment: ZAB in Germany (EUR 200, 2–3 months), UK ENIC in the UK (GBP 49.50 + VAT, 10–15 working days), or WES in the US (USD 248). No local licensing exams apply. Apostilling an Uzbek diploma via my.gov.uz costs UZS 75,000.
Where can you actually work?
Dedicated technical writing roles are rare within domestic Uzbek firms, where documentation is usually assigned to developers, QA engineers, or product managers. However, IT Park resident firms, regional hubs such as EPAM and Exadel, and fintech institutions like TBC and Uzum hire dedicated technical writers. The domestic monthly salary ranges from UZS 5,000,000 to UZS 17,500,000 (median around UZS 9,500,000).
Working remotely for international tech companies from Uzbekistan is a realistic path. Foreign employers hire through B2B service contracts as an Individual Entrepreneur (YaTT) or Self-Employed contractor, or via Employer of Record (EOR) services like Deel and Remote.com. International mid-level contract rates range from USD 25.00 to USD 50.00 per hour (roughly USD 4,000 to USD 8,000 gross per month). Relocating abroad to Germany, the US, or the UK is possible with employer sponsorship; in the UK, the Skilled Worker Visa requires meeting a general salary threshold of GBP 38,700 per year.
Where are the jobs posted?

Domestic vacancies in Uzbekistan are listed on HeadHunter Uzbekistan (hh.uz) and IT Park community channels (it-park.uz). How much English, honestly?
There is a distinct gap between university admission thresholds and workplace requirements. For academic admission, the University of Limerick in Ireland requires Academic IELTS 6.5 (no component below 6.0) or TOEFL iBT 90; Sheffield Hallam University in the UK requires Academic IELTS 6.5 (minimum 6.0 in writing and all skills); and Mercer University in the US accepts TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.5. In Germany, Hochschule Karlsruhe teaches in German and does not use IELTS, requiring TestDaF Level 4 in all four components or Goethe-Zertifikat C1 instead.
In the workplace, however, a B2 level is not enough to get hired by international employers. Phrasing ambiguities or grammatical inaccuracies will disqualify an applicant during portfolio screening. Professional software and API documentation requires a functional proficiency of C1 or C2 in written English to ensure precise terminology, active voice, and flawless clarity.
