What does the day look like?
A Cloud Security Engineer designs, automates, and audits defenses across cloud providers like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. The largest portion of the week involves coding: 35% of working time is spent writing Terraform, OpenTofu, or Ansible configuration and embedding static scanners like Checkov, tfsec, Trivy, or KICS into CI/CD pipelines. Another 25% goes to investigating misconfiguration alerts in tools like Wiz, Orca Security, or Prisma Cloud, while 25% is spent on architecture reviews, documentation, and compliance audits like SOC 2 and ISO 27001.
The glamorous part that teenagers often imagine—stopping live hackers and incident defense—takes up only 15% of the working time. The standard work week is 40 hours during local business hours. However, engineers share production on-call duty, typically carrying a pager on a rotating schedule of 1 week every 4 to 6 weeks using PagerDuty or Opsgenie to handle night and weekend emergency alerts.
