What does the day look like?
Between 85% and 90% of your daily work consists of software engineering, debugging configuration errors, CI/CD pipeline integration, maintaining API integrations between security agents, writing architecture documentation, and handling Jira tickets. You write and tune detection rules in Splunk, Elastic Security, Microsoft Sentinel, or Google SecOps using KQL, SPL, or Sigma rules, and automate workflows in Cortex XSOAR or Tines. You also write security policies as code using Terraform and Open Policy Agent, and configure SSO and MFA in Okta or Microsoft Entra ID.
Only 10% to 15% of your day is spent on offensive investigations, analyzing attack techniques, and reproducing vulnerabilities. Standard hours are 38 to 40 hours per week without rotational shift work. However, engineers participate in an on-call rotation (typically 1 week every 4 to 8 weeks) to handle critical infrastructure outages or major incident escalations.
