What does the day look like?
A CISO is an executive risk manager rather than a hands-on terminal operator. In an average 45-to-55-hour working week, only 5% to 10% matches the teenager's imagination of live threat tracing or configuring firewalls. A CISO almost never touches production firewalls or writes exploit payloads.
About 35% of the week goes to presenting risk metrics to the Board of Directors, defending multi-million-dollar capital and operational budgets, and aligning security with revenue goals. Another 25% is dedicated to governance and compliance across frameworks such as NIST CSF 2.0, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, and PCI DSS 4.0. Team leadership and negotiating enterprise agreements for tools like CrowdStrike Falcon and Splunk Enterprise Security take 15%, while 15% involves leading crisis response alongside legal counsel and forensic retainers. Hours are typically 08:30 to 18:00, accompanied by 24/7 executive on-call duty where major ransomware breaches require continuous emergency work until recovery.
