What does the day look like?
Between 10% and 15% of the day involves technical investigations, threat hunting, and active incident mitigation. The remaining 85% to 90% is spent on managerial reality: reviewing SOC triage summaries, auditing compliance against ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 2 Type II, NIST CSF, PCI-DSS, and the EU NIS 2 Directive, evaluating third-party vendor risks, and managing department budgets.
Core tools include Splunk Enterprise Security, Microsoft Sentinel, CrowdStrike Falcon, OneTrust, ServiceNow GRC, Drata, Vanta, Tenable Nessus, Qualys VMDR, Okta, and CyberArk PAM. Work runs 40 to 50 hours per week on a standard daytime schedule, accompanied by 24/7/365 executive on-call accountability during critical security incidents.
