What does the day look like?
A standard work week is 40 hours (09:00 to 18:00). While beginners picture non-stop hacking, only 30% of the day is spent on hands-on exploitation, drafting payloads, and adversary simulation. The largest share, 40%, is dedicated to documentation, writing vulnerability reports, calculating CVSS v3.1/v4.0 scores, and outlining remediation steps. Another 20% goes to scoping calls, client meetings, and technical debriefs, while 10% is spent maintaining labs, writing custom scripts in Python, Bash, PowerShell, or Go, and tracking new CVE disclosures.
Daily work relies on tools like Burp Suite Professional, Nmap, Metasploit, Cobalt Strike, BloodHound, Mimikatz, Hashcat, Nessus, and Wireshark. Testing high-impact banking or healthcare production systems is routinely scheduled during night maintenance windows (22:00 to 04:00) or on weekends to prevent service disruptions.
