What does the day look like?
A director's day changes by phase. In pre-production, you spend 8-12 weeks doing 10-hour days in offices or scout vans: script passes, casting reels, shot lists, production design mood boards, and stunt plans. The tools can include Final Draft, Movie Magic Scheduling, Movie Magic Budgeting, StudioBinder, FrameForge 3D Studio, Shot Designer, and Milanote.
During production, an indie film may shoot for 3-8 weeks, while a studio project can run 12-24 weeks. Set days are usually 12-16 continuous hours, with frequent night shoots from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM and difficult weather locations. Directors monitor work with Teradek Bolt, SmallHD monitors, and QTake. The glamorous part, directing actors on set, is only 15%-20% of the workday. The other 80%-85% is script breakdowns, meetings, casting, location scouting, schedule clashes, budget cuts, technical blocking, and post-production supervision. Post-production is another 10-20 weeks of 8-10 hour days in editing suites using DaVinci Resolve Studio, Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Frame.io.
