What does the day look like?
A typical shooting day on set lasts 10 to 14 hours, excluding transit and prep. It operates on shifts, such as day shoots from 07:00 to 19:00 or night shoots from 18:00 to 06:00, with a 10 to 11 hours turnaround before the next morning call. Extreme weather, remote exterior locations, and high physical stamina are constant conditions. Sitting beside the director discussing creative choices represents under 5% of the day. In reality, 50% of the day is high-stress visual observation and error-checking under loud conditions, and 45% is data entry, stopwatch timing, lined script drafting, and reporting.
You work using ScriptE on iPadOS and macOS, FileMaker Pro templates, GoodNotes or PDF Expert, dual-display stopwatches, physical continuity binders, multi-colour pens, rulers, and noise-cancelling headphones connected to the sound department transmitter. Tasks include lining the script to record visual coverage and audio takes, logging camera slate, lens focal length, T-stop, focus distance, frame rate (fps), and tracking dialogue word-for-word. You also monitor physical continuity such as prop handling, wardrobe details, and 180-degree eyelines. At wrap, you compile the Daily Continuity Log, Editor's Notes, and the Daily Production Report for post-production.
