What does the day look like?
A Line Producer is the day-to-day general manager of physical production. The day is spent updating budgets and cost reports, tracking cash flow, approving purchase orders, building DOOD sheets, shooting schedules, call sheets and turnaround windows, and using Movie Magic Budgeting, Movie Magic Scheduling, Showbiz Budgeting, StudioBinder, EP SmartAccounting, Greenslate / CAPS Payroll, Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.
The glamorous part is small: contact with famous cast, premieres or creative decisions are about 5% of working time. The other 95% is spreadsheets, contracts, union rules, vendor negotiation, permits, catering, transport, security and crisis handling. During principal photography, days usually run 12 to 16 hours, Monday through Friday or Saturday. Split shifts, night shoots, weekend calls and 24/7 on-call emergencies are normal.
