What does the day look like?
The day starts in ShotGrid or ftrack: assigned shots, supervisor and client notes, frame ranges, published 3D assets, and camera tracks. Then the tool depends on your discipline: Nuke/NukeX, Silhouette, Mocha Pro, Houdini, Maya, Katana, Arnold, RenderMan, V-Ray, Unreal Engine, 3DEqualizer, or SynthEyes.
About 15% to 20% of the day is dailies and retake notes. Around 25% to 30% is the creative part: tuning physics in Houdini, or matching EXR passes, black levels, lens distortion, and grain in Nuke. The other 50% to 60% is careful repetitive technical work: roto, wire removal, patch painting, render farm errors, and file paths. Normal studio hours are 40 hours per week, typically 09:30 to 18:30. In the 3 to 8 weeks before delivery, crunch can rise to 50 to 70 hours per week, with late nights and weekends.
