What does the day look like?
You own the whole-firm sustainability strategy. Your diary is almost entirely office work: governance meetings, budget review, assurance of reported figures, sessions with lawyers and auditors, board and investor packs. You track energy use, resource conservation, recycling, pollution reduction, waste elimination, transport and building design, you build evaluation and monitoring systems, supervise project staff, control compliance with environmental regulation, approve project proposals on cost and feasibility, run risk assessments.
Tools are GRI standards, the GHG Protocol, CDP disclosure questionnaires, Tableau, Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, SAP, Salesforce, SharePoint. O*NET data: 100% of respondents use email daily, 85% work indoors in controlled conditions daily, 81% have telephone conversations daily, 78% work more than 40 hours in a week. Visiting green projects and talking about climate is a small share of the diary. There is no routine shift, on-call or night work; pressure clusters around reporting season, investor meetings and regulatory filing deadlines.
