What does the day look like?
You spend most of the day on greenhouse-gas accounting under the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and Corporate Value Chain Standard. You collect activity data from facilities, procurement, travel and logistics systems, apply emission factors from DEFRA, EPA, IPCC and IEA tables, build the Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 inventory across 15 Scope 3 categories, reconcile year-on-year variances, write methodology notes and keep audit-ready files, support third-party assurance under ISO 14064-3, prepare CDP climate responses and CSRD or ISSB S2 disclosures, and model science-based-target scenarios with decarbonisation roadmaps.
Tools are Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Sustainability Manager, Watershed, Persefoni, Sweep, Sphera, Enablon, Cority EMS and Enviance, plus Power BI and SQL for large datasets. At junior level 60 to 70 percent of time is data chasing, cleaning and documentation, 20 to 30 percent is calculation and quality control, and 10 percent is presenting results. Advising on climate strategy stays a minority until year 3. Hours are standard office hours with peaks around assurance and disclosure deadlines. No routine shift work, on-call or night work was found in advertised descriptions.
