What does the day look like?
A standard work week is 38 to 40 hours during routine development phases. However, launch campaigns, critical Orbit Insertion phases, and Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP) operations involve 24/7 on-call rotations, shift work, and night shifts. Only 15% to 20% of your time is the glamorous part: deriving orbital mechanics, trajectory maneuvers, and control laws.
In reality, 45% to 50% of your day is spent writing, debugging, profiling, and testing C++, Python, and MATLAB simulation code, fixing build pipelines, and processing telemetry logs. Another 20% to 25% goes to documenting trade studies, sensor failure modes, requirement traceability, and reviewing tickets in DOORS and Jira. The remaining 10% involves coordination meetings with avionics, propulsion, and payload teams. Daily tools include MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape, Stateflow, Systems Tool Kit (STK), Orekit, SPICE, FreeFlyer, dSPACE, and Speedgoat.
