What does the day look like?
During Phase A through D design stages, you work a standard 40 hours per week in an office. About 85% of your time is spent tracing verification matrices line by line in DOORS, writing Interface Control Documents (ICDs), negotiating mass and electrical power budgets between rival subsystem teams, and auditing test logs. Tools include Cameo Systems Modeler (Catia MagicDraw), Ansys Systems Tool Kit (STK), MATLAB / Simulink, Siemens NX, and CATIA, adhering strictly to ECSS and NASA Systems Engineering Handbook standards.
Only 15% of your work involves the glamorous side of spaceflight, such as Concept of Operations (CONOPS) definition, orbit analysis, and live anomaly investigations. However, intensive 12-hour shifts, 24/7 on-call duty, and night or weekend work are required during environmental testing campaigns (TVAC runs 24/7 for weeks) and launch/early orbit phase (LEOP) operations.
