What does the day look like?
Around 30% of your day is spent on statutory compliance: auditing driver hours and rest periods via tachographs, tracking maintenance intervals, and upholding Operator Licence undertakings. Another 30% involves fleet operations: scheduling preventive maintenance, resolving breakdowns, tire management, and administering fuel cards and road tolls. The remaining time goes to commercial route costing, operational profit and loss (P&L) reviews, driver briefings, and handling cargo damage claims or customs delays.
You work daily with tachograph analysis software like Optac3 or Tachomaster, telematics systems like Samsara, Geotab, Trimble, or Transics TX-CONNECT, and Transport Management Systems such as Mandata, Descartes, or Transporeon. Contracted hours are 40 to 45 hours per week (often early shifts like 06:00 to 15:00 or 08:00 to 17:00), but the role requires 24/7 on-call availability for road accidents, breakdowns, and roadside inspections by authorities like the DVSA, BAG/BALM, or ITD.
