What does the day look like?
A Supply Chain Director oversees the end-to-end flow of goods from raw material sourcing to customer delivery. About 40% of the day goes to strategic planning, financial modeling, and S&OP, while 25% is spent resolving supplier crises, border delays, and shipping bottlenecks. Digital systems oversight in ERP platforms takes 20% of your time, and the remaining 15% is dedicated to team leadership, major freight contracts, and compliance audits. Daily tools include SAP S/4HANA (SAP IBP, SAP Ariba), Oracle Fusion Cloud SCM, Blue Yonder, Kinaxis RapidResponse, Manhattan Associates, Microsoft Power BI, and AnyLogic.
The role typically requires 45 to 60 hours per week. There is no shift work, but 24/7 on-call availability is expected during emergency disruptions such as vessel blocks or factory stockouts. Domestic and international travel to manufacturing plants, hubs, and ports accounts for 15% to 35% of the working time.
