What does the day look like?
Your workday centers on coordinating multimodal freight flows across ocean containers, air cargo, block trains, and bonded road transit. Daily tasks involve resolving port container dwell-time and demurrage penalties, verifying customs paperwork (Bills of Lading, CMR, Air Waybills, EUR.1 / Form A origin certificates), and securing vessel booking slots. You will use enterprise software like CargoWise, SAP Transportation Management (SAP TM), Oracle Transportation Management (OTM), port community systems (Portbase, Dakosy, Dubai Trade), and tracking tools like project44, FourKites, and MarineTraffic.
Only about 15% of the work involves high-level shipping negotiations, while 85% is hands-on operational troubleshooting: resolving customs mismatches, handling carrier overbookings, and fighting port detention fees across global time zones. While standard contracts state 40 to 45 hours per week, you are practically tied to global logistics schedules with on-call duties during vessel cut-offs and port disruptions.
