What does the day look like?
Your day involves running articulation drills, vocabulary and picture-card play, and small-group language games. You also prepare flashcards and visual schedules, set up the room, clean toys, log attendance and child responses in Excel, SystmOne, or EMIS, and escort children between the classroom and therapy room. Employers name tools such as Boardmaker, Widgit Symbols, PECS cards, Lamh or Makaton signs, tablet apps for phonics, and standard kindergarten materials, with pulse oximeters used only in clinics.
Direct speech play with children takes up about 30% of the day, while the remaining 70% consists of supervision, nappy and meal support, tidying, documentation, and parent handover. Working hours are daytime, running 30 to 40 hours per week in kindergartens, term-time in schools, and 8 hours per shift in private centres. Night work and on-call duties are not part of this role. Weekend parent meetings in private centres take up to 4 hours per month.
