What does the day look like?

A trainee day is 80% observed or co-delivered sessions, notes, scoring, and preparation, and 20% direct contact led independently. For a qualified therapist, the split shifts toward 60% direct contact and 40% documentation, liaison with schools and wards, and caseload meetings. Teenagers imagine conversation all day, but documentation and measurement take close to half the time.

Work includes case history, standardised assessment, diagnosis of speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders, treatment planning, direct therapy, and family counselling. Clinicians use standardised batteries like CELF-5, PLS-5, Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation, videofluoroscopic swallow study and flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing for dysphagia cases, and systems like Epic, Cerner, and SystmOne. Hours are daytime clinical hours in schools and outpatient clinics, while hospital dysphagia and acute stroke coverage involves early shifts, weekend rotas, and on-call swallow assessments.
