What does the day look like?
Standard hours are 37.5 hours per week in the UK (NHS) or 40 hours per week in the US, typically scheduled Monday through Friday from 08:30 to 17:00. Shift work is rare, though acute-stroke hospital wards or pediatric intensive care units occasionally require weekend on-call duty for dysphagia assessments. Clinicians manage patient records using electronic systems such as Epic Systems, Cerner / Oracle Health, System C (CareFlow EPR), EMIS Web, and Rio EPR.
Direct speech play and therapy with children accounts for 35% of the working day. Another 35% of the day is spent on clinical documentation, legal report writing, and IEP or EHCP compliance. Around 20% of the time involves evaluating swallowing and aspiration risks (dysphagia) using instrumental tools such as VFSS/MBS and FEES. The remaining 10% is spent traveling between community clinics, schools, and home visits. Other daily tasks include administering diagnostic batteries like CELF-5, BDAE, and GFTA-3, alongside configuring AAC devices such as Tobii Dynavox, PRC-Saltillo, TouchChat, and Proloquo2Go.
