What does the day look like?
The day combines hands-on therapy with a heavy administrative workload. Clinical work covers developmental language disorders, late talking, speech-sound difficulties, stammering, autism-related communication needs, and feeding and swallowing support for infants and young children. Sessions involve standardised assessments, play-based therapy, tongue, jaw, and facial muscle exercises, augmentative and alternative communication systems, and coaching parents and teachers.
A large share of the working week is non-clinical: writing evaluation and discharge reports, attending individualized education meetings, coordinating care plans, and logging notes in electronic health record systems like eClinicalWorks EHR software. O*NET survey data shows 100% of practitioners have daily face-to-face discussions and 59% face daily time pressure. In the United Kingdom, the National Health Service standard working week is 37.5 hours. It is daytime, weekday, clinic- and school-based work without night shifts or on-call rotas.
