What does the day look like?
The assistant works under a registered speech and language therapist, supporting patients with speech production, language comprehension, feeding, swallowing, stammering, and voice disorders. Concrete tasks include preparing rooms and equipment, helping patients during appointments, writing reports on patient conditions, and updating electronic records. Sessions involve picture cards, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, and electronic patient record systems used across the National Health Service such as EMIS and SystmOne, alongside liaison with teachers, doctors, nurses, and psychologists.
Direct face-to-face therapy takes up roughly half the day or less. The remainder goes into record-keeping, material preparation, team meetings, and travel between schools or clinics. The standard full-time week is 37.5 hours and may include early starts, evenings, weekends, and night shifts depending on the setting. There is no regular on-call duty at assistant level.
