What does the day look like?
The assistant implements treatment plans designed by the therapist: working with clients on a 1-to-1 basis and in groups, assisting with screenings of language, voice, fluency, articulation, or hearing, and preparing instructional materials. Other concrete tasks include updating patient records, preparing charts and graphs of client performance, and testing equipment. Named software and tools include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office software, email software, text to speech software, language analysis software, speech analysis software, signal analysis software, biofeedback software, Bungalow Software Aphasia Tutor, and Adobe Audition.
The interactive side—running language games and practice drills with children—takes up roughly half of client contact time. The other half is spent on documentation, data entry, room tidying, and travelling between schools, clinics, nurseries, health centres, hospitals, and homes. Work hours run 37 to 40 hours per week on a daytime rota between 8am and 6pm. Night shifts and on-call duties are not part of this role. All work takes place indoors in close physical proximity with daily face-to-face discussion.
