What does the day look like?
In a 37.5-hour (NHS) or 40-hour week, 40% to 50% of your time is spent on hands-on complex clinical therapy, such as assessing dysphagia (swallowing disorders) or non-verbal communication. The day starts from 08:30 to 09:30 with emergency referral triage, electronic patient record checks, and sickness cover. From 09:30 to 12:30, you run specialised clinical procedures, including Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES), videofluoroscopy (VFSS), and complex Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) assessments.
The remaining 50% to 60% of the day is administrative leadership. Between 13:00 and 14:30, you run 1-to-1 supervision sessions with Band 5 and Band 6 therapists, monitor 18-week referral-to-treatment targets, and assess sickness reviews. From 14:30 to 16:30, you attend multidisciplinary meetings with neurologists and dietitians, investigate incidents via Datix, and manage equipment budgets using Epic Systems, Cerner Millennium, Tobii Dynavox Communicator 5, or Grid 3. Work runs Monday to Friday, 08:00–16:30 or 08:30–17:00, with no overnight shifts, though acute trusts require weekend on-call coverage roughly 1 in 6 or 1 in 8 weekends.
