What does the day look like?
A school speech and language therapist conducts standardised clinical assessments using tools like CELF-5, ACE, TROG-2, and DEAP to evaluate developmental language disorders, speech sound difficulties, stammering, and social communication needs. You deliver direct 1-to-1 or small-group therapy sessions in mainstream or special schools, and set up Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems using Proloquo2Go, Grid 3, or Tobii Dynavox software.
Working hours are typically 37.5 hours per week (08:30 to 16:30, Monday to Friday), often on term-time contracts covering 39 weeks per year, with zero night shifts or on-call duties. Direct clinical contact with children makes up only 35% to 45% of your day. The remaining 55% to 65% is consumed by administrative paperwork: drafting statutory clinical contributions for EHCP or IEP frameworks, logging notes into SystmOne or EMIS Health, travelling between school sites, and training school staff.
