What does the day look like?
Your workday takes place in clinics, hospitals, or schools during standard weekday clinical hours. Night shifts are not routine, and on-call duties are rare outside acute hospital dysphagia units. A common misconception is that this job only involves helping children pronounce sounds; in reality, adult stroke and brain-injury rehabilitation, voice disorders, stuttering, and dysphagia (swallowing disorders) make up a major share of caseloads.
Clinical tools include audiometers, speech-analysis software, videofluoroscopy, fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. A large portion of each week is taken up by documentation, writing reports, scheduling, and electronic health record systems. According to O*NET 29-1127.00 data, 99% of workers report constant contact with others, 100% engage in face-to-face discussions every day, and 80% work in very close physical proximity.
