What does the day look like?
Between 70% and 80% of your working time is spent indoors at a computer. You write numerical hydrodynamic models using Python (xarray, NumPy, SciPy, pandas, cartopy), MATLAB, R, or Fortran/C++, clean terabytes of sensor data in NetCDF (.nc) and HDF5 formats, write grant proposals, and draft research papers. Another 10% goes to laboratory work like titration and mass spectrometry, as well as institutional meetings.
At-sea research campaigns make up only 10% to 20% of an oceanographer's annual hours (and 0% for purely computational modellers). Aboard research vessels, operations run 7 days a week for 2 to 6 continuous weeks in 12-hour shifts (such as rotating 00:00 to 12:00 night watches). Deploying and calibrating heavy equipment like CTD rosettes, ADCPs, and Niskin water bottles happens in confined quarters through sea-sickness. In the office, the schedule is a standard 38 to 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00.
